  • Nourishing Breakfasts

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we strongly believe that food is healing. We have an opportunity three times a day to nourish ourselves with healing whole, unprocessed foods. In this day and age of convenience food, we have lost the importance of sitting down for breakfast. Patients tell me that they grab a yogurt, a smoothie, or buy their breakfast at the coffee shop. Basically, they are eating on the run or at their desk at work.

Breakfast is an important meal and I encourage you to make time for your breakfast....I would like to challenge you to eat something warm and nourishing! The following are some healthy warm breakfast ideas. Try these out and see which meals feel good in your body:

  • Living in Harmony with the Seasons: Autumn

    Fall

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we observe nature and seasonal changes to learn proper ways of staying in harmony. When we live in harmony with the season, we are also ensuring harmony within ourselves. From observing the seasons, we believe that there are certain foods to eat, required amounts of rest, and certain emotions that arise. Thus in the Autumn, we eat the seasonal foods of Autumn. As the days get shorter, we increase our rest and sleep more.

  • Living in Harmony with the Seasons: Summer

    Summer Flowers

Summer is fast approaching. The days are getting longer and the weather is much warmer.

Summer is the season of abundant growth. Nutritionally, this means we have lots of local fresh fruits and vegetables available. Have fun creating beautiful meals with a variety of colorful vegetables. In the Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is now seasonally appropriate to eat more raw foods or to lightly cook your foods- gently steam or stir-fry. It is appropriate to eat "lighter" foods- fresh fruit, salads, grains, legumes, eggs, and fish. In the Summer, butter is rich with nutrients from cows eating green grass which gives butter the natural yellow color. A nutritious side dish might include lightly steamed seasonal vegetables topped with organic grass-fed butter or ghee.

  • Preventing Colds and Flus in the Fall and Winter

Regular acupuncture treatments are helpful to keep the immune system strong. The best time to start treatments to prevent colds and flus is late Summer and early Autumn but you can still benefit at other times. If you do catch a cold or flu, acupuncture treatments are very helpful to alleviate symptoms and can help you get through your illness quicker and more completely (so you don't experience the lingering, annoying symptoms). When working with a trained herbalist, herbs are also helpful to prevent and treat colds and flus.

In Chinese Medicine, we focus on strengthening the Lung organ to boost the immune system and prevent colds and flus. Here are some tips you can do on your own to tonify your Lungs and boost your immune system this Season

  • My Nutritional Approach and Weston A. Price

My nutritional approach profoundly changed through learning of the work of Dr. Weston A. Price. I want to share with you some of the key points to his research and how profound his work is in today's world. Dr. Price concludes, "..An adequate well-balanced diet is capable of building people strong and well in all respects and adequate from maintaining health and strength. This is the right of all mankind and their sacred birthright. The primitive races have demonstrated a score of different nutritional formulas, any and all of which will accomplish this" (455). Here are some of the findings that are relevant to us today:
